VILLAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEET DECEMBER 12

    A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held December 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Village Office.  Present were Chairman Havelka; Trustees Felty, Guyle, Wielage and Wimer.  Also present were Clerk Moline, Utility/Maintenance Supt. Raver and Police Chief Carlson.  Guests were Matt Bratsburg, Rick Miller, Levi Durnal, Jim Halbmaier, Craig Jones, Cort Silliman and Cody and Jenea Sweeter.

    Havelka was re-elected Chairman.  The following appointments were made:  Police Chief/Zoning Administrator/Nuisance Enforcement Officer-Jerry Carlson; Clerk/Treasurer-June Moline; Utility/Maintenance Supt.-Nick Raver; Attorney-Bromm, Lindahl, Freeman-Caddy, Lausterer Law Firm; Accountant-Ed Schroeder; Engineer-Olsson Assoc.; Street Supt.-Julie Ogden; Bldg. Inspector-Terry Miller; Hearing Officer-Alberto Silva.  Approvals made were Bank of Mead-official depository for the deposit of village funds; Inspro-insurance carrier; Retirement Plan Consultants-401k Administrator; Wahoo Newspaper-official newspaper; method of posting of meetings at the Bank of Mead, Mead Post Office and Village Office; and members of the Planning Commission and Library Board are made by appointment by the Village Board of Trustees.  The following committees were created:  Common Facility Board-Wielage and Wimer; Municipal Board of Health-Havelka, Carlson and Mary Miller; Board of Adjustments-Felty, Havelka, Wielage, Wimer, and Planning Chair Weible, with Guyle as alternate.  A retainer for 2018 with Bromm, Lindahl, Freeman-Caddy, Lausterer Law Firm was approved at $350.00

   SCHEDULED GUESTS:  Planning Commission members Rick Miller, Matt Bratsburg and Levi Durnal entered into discussion regarding proposed amendments to the Zoning Regulations.  Jenea Sweeter requested amendment to Code 6-205 to permit chickens within the village.  Craig Jones, First National Bank, discussed guidelines for the interim construction loan for the water project.

   REPORTS:  Planning Commission-The minutes of the November 27 meeting and permits were accepted.  Building Permits:  17-21 Jeremy Harnish-construct deck; 17-22 Brooke Koehler-construct 4’ fence; and 17-24-Lee Feldhaus-place two trailers; Demolition Permit:  17-23 Lee Feldhaus-remove two trailers.  Utility/Maintenance Supt.-Raver reported well 92-1 test results; well concern; suggested code amendments and bids for decorative lamppost repair and rubber tires for the skidloader.  Police Chief/Nuisance Enforcement Officer-The Monthly Police Report and current nuisance abatements were presented.  Resolutions 17-06, 17-13 and 17-15 Nuisance Abatements were approved as meeting necessary guidelines.  Nuisance Abatement Resolutions 17-16, 17-17 and 17-18 were approved. Library-The minutes of the November 15 Library Board Meeting were accepted.  Action was taken to approve change of meeting date from the third Wednesday of the month to the third Monday of the month.  Clerk-Approval was granted for Moline to attend Clerk Academy in Grand Island on March 27 and 28.  Contact will be made with Troy Kadavy to create a website.

   NEW BUSINESS:  Action was taken to adopt Ord. No. 701, Chapter 8, Section 8-103, Municipal Property; Sale and Conveyance; approve applications to NE Liquor Comm. from Mead Days Assoc. to serve alcohol at the Mead Park during Mead Days on June 15,16 and 17 and Mead Volunteer Fire Dept. to serve alcohol at the Community Bldg. for a Wild Game Feed on February 17.  Motion to adjourn at 7:53 p.m.

 

TWIN RIVERS YMCA in Valley is looking for lifeguards and swimming instructors.

 

Step 1:  PRACTIC SWIMMING

You must be able to perform: 

100 yards of front crawl.

50 yards of head up sidestroke, breast stroke, and front crawl.

50 yards of frog kick on your back with no arms; and tread water for 2 minutes.

NOTICE:  Beginning in January 2018, regular meetings of the Mead Public Library Board of Trustees have been changed from the third Wednesday of each month to the third Monday of each month at 5:30 pm.

 

Monthly Schedule

Coffee Hour is scheduled every Tuesday at 10am.

Story Time for young children is offered every Tuesday at 4pm.  We read a book or two, make a craft and receive a take home snack.  Join us!

The Mead Public Library Board of Trustees will meet Monday, January 15, at 530pm in the Library.  Please consider joining our Board.  See Library staff or a current Board member for information.

The Lunch Bunch Book Club will meet Friday, January 19, 2018, from 1130am-1230pm.    



Special Events

Saturday, January 20, 2018 – Mead Library Friends of the Foundation will host their Annual Spaghetti Feed at Mead High School. Come support the Library during the Mead vs. Malcolm basketball games. Dinner will be served starting at 4pm and includes spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, breadstick, choice of homemade desert, and beverage. Preschoolers will eat free, the charge for K-6th grade will be $4.00, and for 7th grade through adult, the price will be $6.00. Free will donations to the Library will also be gratefully accepted.

Friday, January 26, 2018 – Come to the Library between 10am and 12noon for the Make Your Own Terrarium event. This activity is open to all ages, but an RSVP by 12noon on Friday, January 19, is required to ensure supplies will be available.

Wednesday, January 31, 2018 – The Library will be hosting children and stuffed animals between 6pm-7pm during Our Library is a Zoo. All ages are invited to bring a favorite stuffed animal to snuggle with during this special reading time. All participants will receive a prize to take home.

 

Thank You

Thanks to everyone who contributed items or bought holiday décor at the Annual Holiday Sale Fundraiser in December. Proceeds from the sale have been set aside for the Summer Reading Program. The community’s support of Mead Public Library is appreciated.

 

SNOW REMOVAL GUIDELINES

Any vehicle parked in violation of any traffic regulations or parked so as to obstruct the free movement of traffic or to cause a traffic hazard, or parked on any street or alley obstructing the removal of snow may be immediately removed upon order of the Police Department.  5-304

 

Following a snowfall of two (2”) or more, it shall be unlawful to park or stand any vehicle on any street within the Village of Mead until the street has been cleared.  5-311

 

All sidewalks within the municipality shall be cleaned within twenty-four (24) hours after the cessation of the snow.  8-201

Santa Claus will visit the students at Mead Elementary School on December 15 at 10:00 a.m.  Following his visit to the school, he will be transported by members of the Mead Fire/Rescue Department to the Village Office at approximately 11:00 a.m.  He will be at the Village Office until 11:30 a.m.

 

VILLAGE MEETING MINUTES - The Village of Mead Board of Trustees met on November 14 at 6:00 p.m. at the Village Office.  Present were Chairman Havelka; Trustees Felty, Guyle, Wielage and Wimer.  Also present were Clerk Moline, Utility/Maintenance Supt. Raver and Police Chief Carlson.  Guest was Ed Schroeder.

   The minutes of the October 10 Regular Meeting and October 26 Special Meeting/Hearing were accepted.  The  Treasurer’s Report, claims and Certificate Payment #1 to Grosch Irrigation for $45,465.43 for well drilling were approved.

   SCHEDULED GUEST:  Accountant Ed Schroeder presented the 10/1/16 - 9/30/17 Audit Report.  The report was approved. 

   REPORTS:  Police/Zoning Administrator/Enforcement Officer - Carlson presented the monthly police report, an update on current nuisance abatements and reported several properties with nuisances.  Utility/Maintenance Superintendent - Discussion was held on delinquent water/sewer bills, shut-off process and a well concern.  Action was taken to approve abandonment of a test well and Well #69-1.  Planning Commission - The minutes of the October 23 meeting/hearing were accepted.  Action on amendments to the Zoning Regulations was tabled.  Action was taken to waive the penalty fees to Lee Feldhaus for removing and placing two trailers at C&L Villa.  Clerk - Moline reported the Appreciation Dinner for board members and employees and their spouses/guests will be January 7 at G&L Café.

   NEW BUSINESS:  A report from DEQ on the October 1 inspection of the dumpsite was reviewed.  Resolution 17-15, Nuisance abatement on property described as 204 W. Eighth St., Lot 7, Mead, was adopted.  The meeting adjourned at 7:37 p.m.

Special Events

Thursday, December 7 – Join us for a Children’s Holiday Picture Craft Event.  Children can drop by between 3pm and 530pm to pose for a photo and make a holiday frame for it. This photo would make a nice gift for someone special.

Tuesday, December 19 – Youth of all ages are invited to our Welcome Winter Party starting at 4pm.  We will read stories, decorate cookies, do crafts, play games, and win prizes.

Friday, December 22 – Come participate in the Cupcake Wars. The annual competition for ages 10 and older will begin at 10am.  Stop by the Library before 7pm Tuesday, December 19, for official rules and registration form. Pre-registration is required.

The Annual Holiday Sale Fundraiser runs until close on Friday, December 22.  Winter holiday items can be purchased for a free will offering. Come finish decoration shopping and support your Mead Public Library.

Trustees Hold Special Meeting and Public Hearing

     The Village of Mead Board of Trustees held a Special Meeting and Public Hearing on October 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Village Office.   Answering roll call were Guyle, Wielage and Wimer.  Absent were Havelka and Felty.  Also present was Clerk Moline.  Guests were Layla Giorgakopoulos, Alice Adams and Robert Hannan. 

    Wimer was elected Chairman Pro-tempore.

    A public hearing was called at 6:03 p.m. to discuss an application from G&L Café for a Liquor License.  Resolution 17-14, Recommendation to the NE Liquor Control Commission to approve a Class C Liquor License to G&L Café was adopted.   The hearing adjourned at 6:06 p.m.

     A nuisance abatement issue was tabled until November 14.  Adams and Hannan brought concerns to the board.       

     The meeting adjourned at 6:33 p.m.

The Village Office will be closed December 25 and 26, part of December 28 and 29 and January 1 and 2. 

 

CONGRATULATIONS to the Mead Lady Raiders Volleyball Team for qualifying for the Class D2 State Volleyball Tournament.  We are very proud of you!

 

Come and support the Mead Raiders Basketball teams as they kick off their seasons.  The Junior High boys first game was at Cedar Bluffs on November 14.  The Junior Varsity girls, Varsity girls and Varsity boys teams play Johnson County Central at home beginning at 4:30 on December 1.  The Junior Varsity boys play their first game on December 8 at 4:30 p.m. at Palmyra.  The Junior High girls play Cedar Bluffs at home on January 15 at 4:00 p.m.

 

Thank you to members of the Mead Fire Department and Rescue Squad for hosting Santa Claus during his visit to the children in Mead.

 

The Bank of Mead is sponsoring the Annual Christmas Coloring Contest for kids through grade six.  The pictures that need to be colored and submitted to the Bank of Mead by 10:00 a.m., FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22nd for judging.  The Christmas Present sheet will be colored by Pre-K through grade 2 and the Fireplace sheet by grades 3-6.  There are four age groups:  Pre-K through grade K, grades 1-2, grades 3-4 and grades 5-6.  Prizes will be awarded.

     You can pick up the color sheet at the Bank of Mead or the Village of Mead office.  Please include your name, phone number and age on the BACK of the coloring sheet.

     The bank will be providing cookies and treats from December 20 - 22 at the Main Bank.  YUM!
