Mead Community Group Healthy Family Tip of the Month

This month we continue talking about Family Assets, which are the everyday things families do to be strong.  The actions we take that help build healthy relationships in turn help create resilient individuals.

Adapting to Challenges

Families are stronger when they balance everyday commitments, make decisions and solve problems together, and adjust when necessary.

*Be aware of each other’s competing responsibilities.  Sometimes a parent needs to devote more time at work, maybe a teen has to rebalance his or her schedule due to participation in a school play or athletic event, perhaps a grandparent needs extra attention while they recover from surgery.  Make it a point to communicate about what is going on.

*Solve problems together.  When issues arise see them as opportunities to think creatively to find solutions as a family.  Encourage everyone to brainstorm possible ideas.

*Prepare for inevitable changes in life.  Some change is expected, some not.  When possible gather information to help be informed and most importantly talk about what is happening.

*Do things together and with others.  During times of added stress it is easy to withdraw and become isolated.  Make a point to do things together as a family.  Talk, laugh, walk, show affection, play and encourage each other.  Make it a point to be with other important people who provide you with support.

*Remember what’s most important to your family.  When facing difficulties, take time as a family to remember what your family values.  These priorities will help keep you grounded and strong even through challenges.

See www.ParentFurther.com/familyassets for more information

The Mead Community Group will again be showing a child friendly movie on Saturday night of Mead Days at 7:00 pm at the Mead High School commons.  Free of charge.  Children under the age of 7 should be accompanied by a responsible individual.  Following the movie, a Glow-in-the-Dark Dodgeball tournament will be held in the gym for youth ages 5th grade and up.
