VILLAGE OF MEAD BOARD OF TRUSTEES
A regular meeting of the Village of Mead Board of Trustees was held Feb. 9, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. Present were Chairman Howell, Trustees Feldhaus, Halbmaier, Raver and Swanson. Also present were Clerk/Treasurer Moline, Utilities/Maintenance Supt. Walling and Police Chief Carlson. Guests present were Dennis Berry, Mike Coyle, Nick Raver, Rod Wimer, Rick Wielage, Terral Brabec, John Haag, Steve Mayfield and Brenda Halbmaier.
Brenda Halbmaier, representing the Library Board, addressed the Librarian’s review and discussed purchase of shelving for the library.
Action was taken to approve Resolution 10-03, Special Designated Liquor License to Mead Fire Dept. on 6/18 & 19 during Mead Days at the park; Resolution 10-04, Special Designated Liquor License to Mead Fire Dept. on 6/20 during Mead Days at the Community Bldg.; Special Permit to close streets during Mead Days 6/18 & 19; and Resolution 10-05 , Amend Employee Handbook.
REPORTS:
Utility/Maintenance Supt.: Tasks were addressed.
Police: The monthly report was presented.
Clerk: Reported was submission of an application for an energy grant for lighting and furnace/AC upgrades at the Community Bldg., meter maintenance needs, comp time report, and scheduled dates for Clerk Academy, Pet Clinic, Garage Sale Day and Clean Up Day.
Library: The Feb. 6 meeting agenda was reviewed.
Planning Commission: The minutes of the Jan. 25 meeting and Building Permit issued to David Deerson was reported.
The board entered executive session at 7:48 p.m. to hear a proposal for supervision from Jerry Carlson. The board returned to regular session at 8:11 p.m. Approval was granted for Carlson to offer support through supervision to Walling.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:12 p.m.

Green Acre Animal Clinic, Wahoo will be present to administer pet vaccinations and the Village Clerk will be available to issue dog and cat licenses with proof of rabies vaccination. Available on the 10th will be vaccinations of rabies, distemper/parvo for dogs and rabies/distemper for cats. Products available to purchase will be Heartgard and Frontline for your pets. Blood tests for heartworm will also be available.
All dogs and cats within the village limits are required to be licensed by May 1. If you have any questions please contact the Village Office at 624-2495.

Mead Library News for 2010 February by Vera Kuhr, Librarian
Through the years, I have been fortunate to have members of the Library Board of Trustees that were willing to give up an hour or two of their time each month for a meeting and additional time to help with library projects. This means alot and I can brag when we have meetings with other libraries. Visit a meeting and watch for an opening on the board.
Libraries are feeling the pinch of reduced funding. The more the library is used the more funds it can receive. Come in and see what we offer and bring your children. We are looking at getting new shelving for part of the elementary and teen section. The shelving has not been updated in many years and the books (size and amount) have outgrown this section. Please attend a Library Board Meeting (the first Saturday of the month at 8:00 a.m.) if you have any ideas for funding this project or come in and visit anytime the library is open.
Fundraiser: Our Spaghetti Feed Fundraiser was a huge success. Thank you to all who participated and a big thank you to the Mead Public Schools, Student Council, Maybelle Tweedy and the Mead Library and Friend/Foundation Boards for supplying the food and help in the kitchen. We look forward to purchasing some children’s books at the Scholastic Warehouse Book Sale in the spring (whenever it comes).
We have received donations of videos and books and have been busy reviewing these articles and putting them on the shelf.
Easter is coming!!!! Look for dates for the Easter Egg Hunt.
Summer Reading is coming in June. Look for further notices as to dates and how the program will be run.
New Materials: “The Game On Diet”, “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Bloom; “Sudden Death” by Allison Brennen; “Play Dirty”, “Smoke Screen” and “The Witness” by Sandra Brown; “The Woman Next Door” by Barbara Delinsky; “Deadly Harvest”, “Deadly Night”, “Deadly Gift”, “The Death Dealer” and “Unhallowed Tide” by Heather Graham; “Blood Sins” by Kay Hooper; “Shutter Island” by Dennis Lehane (recently released movie); and 6 Sports books for elementary readers and many more. Come in and try a new author.
The library receives the following serials each month: “High Five”, “Your Big Backyard”, “Nebraskaland” and the “Wahoo Newspaper”. Others are brought in for patrons to take home and return at some date. These serials are weeded out at the end of each year (give or take a month or two).

Lent, Holy Week and Easter Services
Lenten Services will be held every Wednesday beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a soup dinner followed by worship with the Lenten Series, “Living the Love of Christ” at 7:00 p.m.
Maundy Thursday, April 1, and Good Friday, April 2, Worship Services begin at 7:00 p.m.
Easter Vigil Service will be held on Saturday, April 3 at 9:00 p.m.
Easter Worship Services will be held Sunday, April 4 at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served between the services.
MEAD FOOD BANK
The Community Food Bank is located at Alma Lutheran Church. If you are in need of food or limited paper products, please contact Pastor Alena at 624-3015 or Jill Dahl at 624-5010 to make arrangements for products. All transactions are kept confidential.
PANERA BREAD will be available to the public on Saturday, March 13. Come to the Alma Lutheran Church basement from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. There is always plenty of bread / rolls to share.
MEAD AREA PRIMETIMER’S
The Mead Area Primetimer’s Club meets every second Thursday of the month at the Mead Covenant Church at 12 PM for potluck and fellowship.
Our next meeting will be March 11. Plan to join us for dinner and fellowship!

NOTICE OF VACANCY ON VILLAGE OF MEAD BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Due to the resignation of Brad Howell, a vacancy exists on the Board of Trustees of the Village of Mead, Nebraska, for the term to expire December 14, 2010. Any qualified elector of the Village of Mead, Nebraska, desiring to fill said unexpired term by appointment should contact June Moline, Clerk of the Village of Mead Village Board of Trustees. Applications will be taken until Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
The 2010 Census Is Coming . . .
“Take 10” and Help the Village of Mead Get What it Needs for the Next 10 Years
In March 2010, more than 130 million addresses will receive a 2010 Census form by mail or hand delivery. The 2010 Census will document the changes in our nation since the last decennial census in 2000, and tell us how we’ve evolved as a country. Because census data affect how more than $400 billion in federal funding is distributed to tribal, state and local governments, the census also will frame the future of our country and our community for the next 10 years.
During Census 2000, the mail participation rate was 72 percent as of the April 2000 cut-off. About $85 million is saved for every one percent increase in mail participation. For these and many other reasons, we must work to encourage everyone’s participation in the census.
Here’s what you should know about the 2010 Census:
It’s easy. One of the shortest census forms in history, the 2010 Census form asks 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. The individual in whose name the housing unit is rented or owned should complete the form on behalf of every person living there, both relatives and nonrelatives.
It’s important. Census data are used to reapportion seats in Congress and ensure proper district representation in state and local governments. Information from the census helps determine locations for child-care and senior centers, new roads, hospitals, schools and community centers.
It’s safe. By law, the U.S. Census Bureau cannot share respondents’ answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities. All Census Bureau employees take an oath of nondisclosure and are sworn for life to protect the confidentiality of the data. The penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
Finally, the most efficient way to respond to the 2010 Census is to complete the form as soon as it arrives and return it in the postage-paid return envelope. Census workers will visit households that do not return forms to take the count in person.
It is very important to communities that census forms are completed and returned as an accurate count of the local population helps to ensure that the Village of Mead receive their fair share of federal funding. This funding includes resources for services, such as health care, education, and roads.

Who is the Mead Community Group and what do they do???
The Mead Community Group is a group of community members who gather together once a month and share a common interest in the health and welfare of the young people and their families in our community of Mead.
What do I have to do to join?
Simply show up at the meetings which have traditionally been held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the High School at 1:00 pm. (lasting approx. one hour) We have had some interest expressed in an evening meeting so we will be exploring the options of moving the meeting time.
What kind of a time commitment is required?
As much or as little as you are interested in investing. The group tries to sponsor a couple events a year and at those times there is a little more work to be done. If you are curious, come visit, you have nothing to lose. You may enjoy yourself, and working to create a healthier community is sure to make you feel good.
