OF MEAD BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEET JUNE 13th
A regular meeting of the
Village of Mead was held June 13, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. Answering roll call were Chairman Havelka and
Trustees Felty and Wielage. Absent were
Trustees Guyle and Wimer. Also present
were Clerk Moline, Utility/Maintenance Superintendent Raver and Police Chief
Carlson. Guests were Ben Day, Colleen
Morrissey, Lee and Bobbie Feldhaus and Dan Sterba.
SCHEDULED GUESTS: Lee and Bobbie Feldhaus updated the
board on improvements at C & L Villa.
Ben Day, Olsson Associates, presented a report on the Water
Project. Action was taken to approve
First National Bank, Omaha as the financing and banking source and Remboldt Law
Firm as Bond Counsel for the Water Project.
Water rate increment increases shall be adopted every six months to meet
USDA requirements for the Water Project.
UNSCHEDULED GUESTS: Colleen Morrissey inquired as to who
is responsible for the drainage issue at Hannan Subdivision. Dan Sterba asked for additional time
to meet the nuisance abatement that was issued on his property.
REPORTS: Police/Zoning Administrator/Nuisance
Enforcement Officer - Carlson presented the Monthly Police Report and the
nuisance abatement process on five properties.
Four properties have met approval while one has not. Approval was granted for Dan Sterba to extend
the abatement until July 10. Utility/Maintenance
Superintendent - Raver reported the purchase of pumps to improve water
pressure at two homes at N. Third Circle and mosquito spraying. Planning Commission - The minutes of
the May 22 regular meeting were accepted.
Library - The minutes of the May 17 Library Board Meeting were
accepted. Layla Giorgakopoulos was
approved as a member of the Library Board.
Clerk - Moline reported the ability to email water/sewer
statements to customers if requested, budget for website design, 2017 property
taxes for the depot and accountant scheduled on July 10 to work on the
budget. Approval was granted to use
PayPort for customer credit/debit card payments.
NEW
BUSINESS: Annual review of the
Conditional Use Permits and Annual Agreement for Depot Rental were
approved. Action was taken to approve a
permit to Scott and Karen Little to cut the curb at 413 S. Vine St., and
approve an Interlocal Agreement with the City of Wahoo to spray mosquitoes in
2017. Tracy Varble was approved as park
restroom custodian at $10.00 per hour.
Ordinance No. 696, set wage for park restroom custodian at $10.00 per
hour was adopted.
The meeting adjourned at 8:11 p.m.

The Village of Mead
now has the option for you to make payments with your credit/debit cards. The payments must be made at the office where
they will be swiped or you can complete on-line. There is a charge to you for this
service. We hope you will enjoy this
additional option available to you for payments.

REMINDER -
All grass and weeds
are to be maintained at a height no greater than 12”. Grass clippings are NOT to be mowed into the
streets. Homeowner's are required to
trim tree branches to a height of at least 14’ above the surface of a street or
sidewalk abutting their property.
DOG OWNERS - Please
keep your dogs on leash when off of your
property. You are required by village
code to remove your dog's excrement from public / private property other than
your own. DOG AND CAT OWNERS—All dogs
and cats are required to be licensed by MAY 1.

intact animal.

baseball - softball season for our youth.

hired to clean the park restrooms during the summer. Layla Giorgakopoulos has agreed to serve as
a member of the Library Board.

We collected a total of 3 dumpsters of “stuff” and 2 dumpsters of iron /

Special Events
Thursday, July 6 – Coding Workshop for children entering grade 4 through
grade 12. From 10am-1pm youth have the opportunity to learn introductory
computer science in this FREE 3 hour game environment class. Lunch is included.
Wednesday, July 12 – Join us from 5pm to 630 pm for Family Game
Night. Board games will be available at the library, or bring your own.
Friday, July 21
– The Library Book Club is scheduled from 1130 am to
1230 pm.
Wednesday, July 26 – Participate in Kids’ Craft Night. This session is
offered from 430pm to 630pm.
Homebound Library Delivery Service
If
you know a community member who is temporarily or permanently housebound, Mead
Public Library can assist by delivering books. There is no charge for this
service. To make arrangements for homebound delivery, call Mead Public
Library at 402.624.6605 or email meadLibrary@outlook.com.

MEAD DAYS REVIEW by Dalene Selko
The weekend
started off with great polka music by Dean Hansen. At approximately 7 p.m. we announced to
everyone that the storm was thirty minutes out, but pretty much everyone wanted
to stay and ride it out. Well it
brought strong winds and numerous attendees were taking shelter in the
pavilion, under tents and in the concession stand. Many volunteers and guests braved the storm
to keep the tents from blowing away and from anyone getting hurt. We had a lot of tree damage and no power. Alex Carritt had brought us a generator to
use Saturday for our blowups which we hooked up immediately to get things up
and running for Mead Days. We did have
to cancel our karaoke and kids’ games sponsored by Mead Community Group, but
otherwise everything else was able to go on.
We had 30 teams in our beer pong competition and Cameron Mikkelsen and
Trevor Smith were the winners. Mary
Linscomb and Sara Else sang the National Anthem before the fireworks. The fireworks were even more spectacular and
lit up the sky due to the whole community being without power.
Saturday started
off with lots of color. We had over 115
participants in our 5K color run. The
weather was perfect. Each participant
was able to receive six stations of color.
A special thanks to Mead Covenant Church and several volleyball players
for being color dispensers. The overall
winner with a time of 21:20 was CJ Martinez.
At the end each participant received a package to open up with a
celebration for everyone. It was so beautiful
and fun. Placing in the color run were:

We continued
with sand coed volleyball with 8 teams.
The winner of the gold tournament was Bank of Mead (Scott Selko, Keshia
Havelka, Shawn and Penny Havelka and Miranda Charles) and the winner of the
silver tournament was Red, White and Brew (Nate Raver, Emily Kmiecik, Tommy
Ruzek and Erin Prohaska). We had 16
teams for horseshoeswith the winner being Jared Knuth and Melissa Harrell.
The parade was
lead by the Yutan American Legion Club and Mary Hass sang the Star Spangled
Banner. PJ Quinn was our awesome MC for
the parade. This year we did a special
tribute to Stan Kucera for his dedication and years of volunteering to our
parade. His two daughters were present
on his behalf.
This year we had
a sanctioned kiddie tractor pull by Barnyard Pedal Pull. We had 33 contestants with the top three
places qualifying for state.

Big Red Bounce
provided our kids blowups again this year with fun water slides and bounce
houses. The children could also do pony
rides, face painting, barrel train rides, and enjoy a petting zoo. A special show by Wildlife Encounters was
enjoyed by all kids and adults. The show
was very fun and educational for all ages.
They brought a snake, alligator, and a fox just to name a few; the kids
got to see and some got to hold.
A rock, paper,
scissor tournament was won by Trey Siske.
Papa Bear Carving was carving wood items for us to watch and auction
off. PJ Quinn and Tim Dickes assisted in
the auction. A special thanks to
everyone who purchased an item.
The afternoon
finished with a great magic show by Keith Weist and his assistant, Kitty. Several kids got to be involved in the
show. The show was very entertaining. Then we followed-up with a presentation from
the Nebraska State Patrol with their service dog unit K-9 division sponsored by
the Mead Community Group.
That evening the
Mead Volunteer Fire Department featured a great street dance by Gilly and the
Kid, sponsored by Raider Nation Autoplex.
The youth movie night had to be cancelled due to no power. In our Chinese horseshoe tournament we had 20
teams with the winners being Tim Petersen and Bob Mesner.
Around 10 p.m.
the power was restored at the park. A
great relief was experienced by a lot of Mead residents.
Sunday rolled
around and we had 7 BBQ contestants. A
special thanks to Shawn Havelka (Wham Blasted BBQ), Lyle Havelka (Sloppy
Seconds), Matan Grasiani (Koshar Pork), Rod Wimer (Git R Done), Darren Kelley
(Kelly’s Creations), Jake Hightower (No Clue BBQ), and Jason Felty. A lot of time and money goes into preparing
the food and providing us with so many delicious entrees. A special thanks goes out to our judges who
donate their time for this event.

closed with a community church service by Mead Covenant Church.
The Mead Days
Committee would like to thank everyone for their hard work and support
throughout the weekend. A special shout
out to Alex Carritt (NMC) and others who brought generators to keep Mead Days
going strong. We would also like to
thank all our donors; without your generosity Mead Days would not be as
successful as it is.
