From
the Mead Community Group
First of all we want to thank so
many of you who helped with many of our projects – Marsha Lamberson and the
Elementary School Student Council during Red Ribbon Week; Valerie Reiman for
coordinating the DARE program beginning in January at Mead Schools; Randy Siske
and Terry Hickman will again be taking a large group of youth to the Red/White
Tailgate event in Lincoln on April 15, 2017; Roxanne Schnell for after-school
mentoring; and those who participated in the Halloween Trunk or Treat at the
Fire Hall, including Jennifer Getzschman who won the door prize. Thank you to the Mead Fire & Rescue
Department for again letting us partner with them to bring a fun and safe event
for little ones on October 31st. Also, a big thank you to PJ Quinn and Dr.
Rawson for always being so very supportive of our group and helping us find
ways to help bring all of these things and more to the Mead Public
Schools. Our most recent addition to our
school system was $1100.00 for the Second Step curriculum for two classes in
the elementary school and $500.00 to be used for character building material
for use in all grades. Over the past six
years Mead Community Group has through grant funding been able to contribute
almost $14,000.00 to the Mead Public Schools for curriculum, speakers, programs
and events. We will be requesting more funding for the 2016-2017 grant year to
provide the Second Step behavioral health program to more grade levels.
The MCG will be changing a bit at the
first of the year. After over six years
at the helm, writing grants, doing all the bookwork, attending coalition
meetings in Lincoln and almost single-handedly keeping the MCG productive,
Jeannette Johnson is retiring from being “Chief” and would like to continue in
a supporting role, letting someone else call the shots and helping as she
can. The MCG will continue to function
as a part of the Saunders County Prevention Coalition, with Mary Hanson
agreeing to coordinate, especially with projects for our schools. Our community owes many thanks to Jeannette
and Mary for tirelessly working to provide healthy lifestyle choices for our
young people. If we are to continue
receiving grant money to continue these community activities (since its
inception in 2008 almost $53,000), we need more participation by community
members. MCG meetings are held at the
High School on the first Tuesday each month and everyone is welcome to attend
and provide input. Attending every
meeting is not necessary. Being
available to help with projects such as the Valentine Day Dance is always
welcome. We just need community support
to continue. If you are willing to help
in any way with just one of our projects or have other ideas to support the
youth of our community, please attend one of our planning meetings or give PJ
Quinn your contact information and MCG will get in touch with you.
From
the Mead Community Group, we wish you all a safe and healthy New Year!
