Mead Community Group – Fall 2015

More parenting tips from the Search Institute Publication, “ask me where I’m going” with questions and comments from teens themselves –

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that parents have far more influence over instilling values in their children than any other factor.  So how can we best do that?  Teens say,

BE HONEST WITH ME, be honest with yourself.

HELP ME ACT FROM MY IDEALS – listen when I talk about the things that mean something to me.

GIVE ME A VOICE.  Take me seriously.  Acknowledge my opinions.  Treat me with respect.

HELP ME BE RESPONSIBLE when I experiment with new activities.  REMIND ME that if I start using alcohol or other drugs, it can be really, really hard to stop.

ACCEPT ME, no matter how “different” I am from you.  Have the courage to tell me or someone else that you’re sorry, if you really are.

ACCEPT AND UNDERSTAND MY MISTAKES.  Applaud my efforts and successes.

HELP ME SOLVE PROBLEMS and change things for the better.  Trust me.

GIVE ME IDEAS, AND FEEDBACK.  Remember that someday soon I will be completely in charge of my life.  Help me be ready for that.

REMIND ME THAT I’M WORTHWHILE.  Encourage me to give tough things my best shot.

HELP ME FIND MY TALENTS.  HELP ME BE REALISTIC.  Reassure me when I’m having doubts.

CELEBRATE MY UNIQUENESS.  Like me just for who I am.

HELP ME LEARN TO BE HAPPY WITH MYSELF, and remember, there is no perfect person out there.

So there we have our challenges, not just for parents, but for all of us privileged to interact with the amazing young people who cross our paths.  Maybe not that easy sometimes, but oh, what lasting outcomes.

We invite anyone in our community, who wants to join our group in trying to have positive relationships with our youth, to join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, November 3rd at 7 PM in the High School Commons.
